About The Iron Shop
A Legacy of Craftsmanship in West Hartford
We've elevated metalworking from craft to art. Our legacy of exceptional craftsmanship transforms spaces throughout Connecticut with bespoke metal creations that stand the test of time.
Our Heritage
The Iron Shop carries on a centuries-old tradition of metalworking in West Hartford, rooted in the blacksmithing heritage of Bishop’s Corner. The workshop, located at 2575 Albany Avenue, has been home to skilled metalworkers since 1880, when Frank H. Strong established his blacksmith shop. Over time, the demand for ironwork evolved, transitioning from horse tack and farming tools to custom ornamental ironwork, railings, and architectural features.
A Testament to Legacy Metalworking
Through the 20th century, the shop adapted to changing times, surviving World War II-era metal shortages and flourishing in the postwar suburban boom under the leadership of Bill Jones and later his son, Graham. In 2005, after over 70 years of continuous operation, the shop changed hands but remained dedicated to custom iron fabrication.
Today, as The Iron Shop by Superb Steel, the workshop continues to handcraft custom railings, stairs, fences, and architectural metalwork, keeping the artistry of iron alive. With deep historical roots and a modern approach to craftsmanship, The Iron Shop stands as a testament to West Hartford’s rich legacy of fine metalworking.
